
VIGO AND CLAY COUNTIES, Ind.- The Indiana Department of Transportation announces the State Road 63 northbound Bridge over U.S. 41 southbound will close on or after Saturday, May 1.
The roadway is scheduled to reopen at the end of September of this year. The detour will take motorist on U.S. 41 northbound to a cross-over at Florida Ave. where a temporary traffic signal will allow U-turn access onto U.S. 41 southbound and then back to S.R. 63 northbound. This project was awarded to White Construction Inc. for $3.2 million. It also includes a bridge deck replacement on State Road 59 in Clay County, located over two miles north of S.R. 246. This work begins May 1 as well. Traffic will be controlled at the bridge with a temporary traffic signal allowing for one travel lane across the bridge

About the Indiana Hands-Free Law In 2019, Indiana Criminal Justice Institute reported that distracted driving from mobile devices was a factor in at least 1,263 crashes and three fatal crashes. To make Hoosier roads safer, Governor Eric J. Holcomb signed the Indiana Hands-Free law to reduce distracted driving across the state. Beginning July 1, 2020, drivers are prohibited from holding a mobile device, except in emergencies, while their vehicles are moving.
