Alice Ann Courtney, 77, died at 1:30p.m. on May 1, 2020, in the ICU of Terre Haute Union Hospital where she had been admitted on April 29, 2020. She had been residing at Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility, in Knightsville, Indiana following several falls in her Illinois Street home and declining health and mobility.
Born in Indianapolis, September 25, 1942, to Virginia (Love) Courtney and John H. Courtney. Alice Ann moved with her mother and sister to the family home in Brazil after her father’s death in 1953. She attended Brazil Junior and Senior High School, graduating in 1960.
She continued her education at Indiana State University receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in teaching. She taught elementary school at North Salem and Connersville before returning to Brazil where she taught at Jackson Street School. She later worked and retired from Union Hospital’s Sterile Supply Department.
A dedicated member of Brazil First Christian Church, she was in the Daughters of Ruth class and used her knitting skills in Prayerful Yarns. She volunteered at the Clay County Genealogy Library in Center Point and was active in TOPS. She was a Past Honored Queen of Job’s Daughters Bethel 29, and a 50-year Eastern Star member.
Surviving are her sisters, Mary Margaret Courtney Sauvain, Indianapolis, 3 cousins, and several close friends and neighbors who had assisted her with groceries, laundry, and doctor appointments.
According to her wishes, her cremated remains will be interred beside her parents at Summit Lawn Cemetery in private services. A public memorial service will be held at a later date after the Covid-19 quarantine is lifted and larger assemblies are possible.
