Putnam County Sheriff Press Release for Train Incident

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, CSX Police, and Putnam County Coroner’s Office are investigating a fatality involving a train and single motorist at CR 300 East north of CR 50 North.

 

On Monday, April 27, 2020, at approximately 11:44 AM, Sheriff’s Deputies, the INdiana State Police, the Greencastle Fire Department, and the Putnam County EMS Ambulance responded to this location on a report of a vehicle struck by a train. The reporting party was CSX railroad dispatch center.

 

The train conductor reported that the train was traveling westbound and that the railroad cross arms were down. The motorist reportedly drove around the activated stop arms, the vehicle stopped on the tracks, and the driver exited the vehicle prior to being struck.

 

Upon arrival of the first responding units, the motorist, and sole occupant of the vehicle, was determined to be deceased.

 

The family has been notified. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
