Byron C. Hamm Jr.



Byron C. Hamm Jr., 89, of Crawfordsville died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 10. 2020, at home.

He was born Oct. 3, 1930, at Crawfordsville, to Byron C. Hamm Sr. and Opal Dicken Hamm. He was a 1948 graduate of Crawfordsville High School. He married Eleanor Ruth Brown on July 24, 1950, at Ringgold, Georgia. She preceded him in death March 2, 1988. He married Roberta A Nickle on Oct. 27,1990. She survives.

He is survived by their children, Kathryn (Jeff) Brooks, Timothy (Janice) Hamm, Michael ( Laurie) Hamm, Lesa (Dave) Henderson, Cindy (Rick) Talbert and David Staley; grandchildren; Stephanie Pinkard, Joshua Brooks, Ryan Hamm, Bethany Stutzman, Kristina Brooks, Mark Hamm, Trevan Hamm, Hannah Ridenour, Abigail Henderson, Kris Stephen, Shannon Black, Timothy Whiteaker, Scott Staley and Alissha Staley; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother Damon Hamm; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Velma Ritter and Marjorie Vaughn; and brother Ramon Hamm.

He was a 70-year member of Young’s Chapel Christian Church, where he served as an elder for 50 years. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, youth sponsor and teacher, serving many years as chairman of the board for the church. He was a past president of the West Central Indiana Mens Fellowship. He served 18 years as forwarding agent for missionary Robert Shelton.

He served his country as a United States Marine during the Korean Conflict stationed in California and Japan. Following his service he became a member of the American Legion.

He worked at RR Donnelley for 17 years and operated Sunoco service stations at Interstate 74 and State Road 32 in Crawfordsville and Interstate 70 and State Road 59 in Brazil where he was certified in air conditioning, tune ups, brake and exhaust. He had a degree in motel m anagement of Hudson, Ohio. He retired from Plastic Innovations in 2002.

Services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16 at Hunt & Son Funeral Home, Crawfordsville, with Gary Edwards officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery North. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15.
