Bessie Mae Moore

On January 8, 2020, Bessie Mae McArthur Moore peacefully passed away at her home in Centerpoint, IN at the age of 89. She was surrounded by her husband of 71 years and her children.

Bessie was born on July 10, 1930 to Neva Belle (Pascoe) and Leonard McArthur in Lawrence County, Indiana. In 1949, she graduated from Heltonville High School, in Heltonville, IN. She married Ralph Stuart Moore on January 16, 1949 and they raised three children—Anne, Nancy, and John. She worked tirelessly at Stuart Moore Oil Corporation until her retirement in 2000.

Bessie loved traveling to exotic places and her favorite trips were to Hawaii, Alaska, Ireland, and along the Amazon River. She enjoyed reading biographies and non-fiction, flower gardening, making pottery, and working puzzles and Sudoku. She and Stuart were members of the Model A Club and also bravely traveled throughout Indiana in various old cars that Stuart remodeled. She spent many hours enjoying nature and the changing seasons from the comfort of the swing on her covered porch. She was a member of the Centerpoint United Methodist Church and the Brazil First Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Ruth, Jim, Louise, Gordon, and Pearl.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Stuart Moore, and their children Anne (Hobert) Hughes, Nancy (David) Wiesman, and John (Terri) Moore. Bessie loved and treasured her 5 grandchildren: Betsy Slavens, Michael Wiesman (Linnea Schuster), Tony Wiesman, Brandon Moore (Shawna), and Breanna Moore and 2 great-grandchildren: Nathan Moore and Eli Moore; as well as many extended family members and friends who also survive.

Bessie will be remembered for the extraordinary generosity she showed her family, her love of dining out, and her utter dislike of cold weather. She was concerned with making sure everyone had their sweaters and wondering if her family was, in general, behaving themselves. Without her stable presence, it is likely the family will not dress warmly enough and will continue to misbehave.

Services will be at Lawson – Miller Chapel 1702 East National Ave. Brazil, Indiana, on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at 1:00pm with Pastor Gary Scroggins officiating. A celebration of life will follow until 4pm at the funeral home. Visit www.lawson-millerchapel.com to light a candle in her memory.
