Lois Elaine (Coulson) Latta, 97, passed away on January 1st, 2020, in her residence in Terre Haute, Indiana. Lois was born in Christopher, Illinois on November 5th, 1922, the daughter of Jabez Lafayette And Bessie Ann (Wiseman) Coulson. Lois led an exciting life as an educator and mentor, world traveler, wife, step-mother, grandmother, and friend.
Lois graduated as a member of the 1940 class of Christopher Community High School (Illinois). She was an excellent student and would receive earned degrees from Southern Illinois University (1944), Oberlin College (1946), and a Ph. D. from the University of Illinois (1959). She taught Geography and related courses at Henderson STC (Arkansas), Western Reserve University (Ohio), Bent Harbor Junior College (Michigan), Flint Junior College (Michigan), was a part time teacher at Eastern Michigan University, and served as faculty of the Department of Geography and Geology for 15 years at Indiana State University (Terre Haute). For a time, Lois was the only woman who served on the Geography faculty. Lois is listed in Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who in American Women.
As a traveler, Lois visited many domestic locations, including most of the fifty states (Hawaii and Alaska were two favorites), as well as Canada, Mexico, and South/Central America. Lois was married to Dennis Leroy Latta of Seelyville, Indiana on May 19th, 1973. They both enjoyed travel and went on several camper trips and cruises together. She enjoyed her retirement years helping Dennis in the house at Latta Mobile Home Park and Apartments on historic Highway 40, took pleasure in cooking, and always kept a cat at home. The Latta’s attended Seelyville United Methodist Church for many years, enjoyed community fish fries and barbecues, and played host for many gatherings at Latta’s. Lois spent many hours corresponding in letters and cards to her closest family and dearest friends.
Lois is survived by her step-children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, her mother and father; two sisters, Dorothy and Miriam; four brothers, Vance, Wilber, Raymond, and Clarence, and many friends she had been close to over the course of her life. Lois also leaves behind a team of caring individuals who helped her at the end of her life with home care.
A gathering of family and friends will be held for a graveside service on Saturday January 11th, 2020, 1:00 pm, at Clearview Cemetery in Brazil (Indiana) where Lois will be laid to rest with her husband, Dennis. French Funeral Home will provide burial services.
