Gary Wayne Hiller, 75, of Crawfordsville passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, at Wellbrooke of Crawfordsville after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 23, 1944, at Ilion, New York, to the late William M. and Mildred J. (Howard) Hiller.
Gary graduated from Ilion Central High School in New York in 1961 and received his master’s degree from Indiana State University. On Dec. 3, 1966, at Indianapolis, he married the love of his life, Phyllis Marie Query. She preceded him in death March 6, 2017.
Gary started as a band director at Lincoln Jr. High School in Plymouth, Indiana and then retired as the band director at North Montgomery High School after 34 years. He was a member of the Montgomery County Civic Band, Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association, Burning Hearts Emmaus and the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, which he was the delegate to their annual conference. He also worked as an advisor at Pages Music and loved puzzles, especially sudoku.
He is survived by two sons, Scott A. Hiller of Kentucky and Dwight D. Hiller of Crawfordsville; brother William H. Hiller of North Carolina; sister Marilyn (Edward) Scram of Pennsylvania; granddaughter Morgan Hiller; brother-in-law David Query; sister-in-law Miriam Boling; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis Hiller; brother-in-law Fred Boling; and sister-in-law Mary Stephenson.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Sanders Priebe Funeral Care, 315 S. Washington St., Crawfordsville. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 at the funeral home, with Pastor Marvin Cheek officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill North Cemetery.
