Luella “Lu” Newby, 90, of Brazil, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2019 in her residence with her family by her side. She was born on April 26, 1929 in Ottawa County, Michigan, the daughter of Albert and Lizzie (Douma) Knoll.
Lu was a graduate of Holland High School and attended Hope College and County Normal School in Michigan. She was a devoted homemaker and member of Staunton First Christian Church. She enjoyed gardening, canning and traveling. Lu loved spending time with her family and cherished her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her children Howard Akers and his wife, Sharon, Harlan Akers and his wife, Carrie, Diane Akers, Philip Sherry-Newby and his wife, Marcia, Donald Newby, Linda Simmons and her husband, Michael, and Joan McAvoy and her husband, Mark; grandchildren Anthony Simmons, Elizabeth Newby, twins Daniel and David Newby, Jeremiah Sherry-Newby and Wade Akers; great-grandchildren Everly, Maisie and Claire; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lu was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Gene Akers, who passed away in 1971, and Donald Newby, in 2008; siblings John, Harvey, Chet and Don Knoll and Millie Borgeson; a great-granddaughter, Michaela Snyder; and a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Newby.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 12:00 P.M. Saturday, October 19, 2019 at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave, Brazil with Pastor Mark Miller officiating. Burial will be in Cloverland Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled on Saturday, one hour prior to services in the funeral home.
