Steven M. Garlits

Steven M. Garlits, 63, of Brazil, passed away at Gibson Family Center for Hospice, on July 27, 2019 following a short battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Steve was born on December 13, 1955, in Clay County, Indiana the son of Floyd and Norma (Warner) Garlits. He graduated from Brazil High School with the class of 1974. Later, he graduated from Ivy Tech and Indiana State University with a degree in Construction Management. Steve had worked on several area construction projects including North Clay Middle School and the Clay County Library. Most recently he had been working as a private contractor.

Steve had a love for music. He had been a dedicated member of the Brazil Concert Band for the past 47 years and he also played with the Jackson Township Band. He and his wife Sherry enjoyed traveling and going to state and national parks. When he was home, he enjoyed entertaining guests and spending time with friends and family.

Steve was a member of the Brazil First Presbyterian Church where he served as a trustee. Steve was a respected member of many area board of directors. He was currently serving as a member of the Brazil Trustee Advisory Board.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Norma Garlits and a brother John Garlits.

Steve is survived by his wife Sherry whom he married on March 29, 2008; sons: Sammie Garlits of Indianapolis and Anthony Hapenny and wife Andrea of Plainfield; a daughter Adrienne Vradenburg and husband Mark of Bakersfield, California; grandchildren: Bryce Hapenny, Kaden Hapenny, Audric Vradenburg, Corvin Vradenburg; a sister Rita Young and husband Duane of Springfield, Illinois; nieces and nephew: Jessica, Rebecca, Rachel, Sarah, and John; a slew of beloved cousins; dear friends Chris and Annette Durchholz and Wrangler and Vicky Thomas.

Visitation will be at the Brazil First Presbyterian Church 210 North Walnut Street Brazil, Indiana 47834 on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 from 3-6pm. Services will be held at the church, on Wednesday, at 6:00pm with Gary Scroggins officiating. Music will be provided by members of the Brazil Concert and Jackson Township Bands.
