John Richard James

John Richard James, 88, of Brazil, Indiana passed away while living at Cloverleaf Health Care on July 1, 2019.

He was born on October 18, 1930, the son of Ross and Emma (Stevenson) James. He graduated from Van Buren High School with the class of 1948. John worked for Bedwell Tire and the Pell family before beginning a career in mining. In 1963, along with Dennis Wadsworth, he began Wadsworth Furnace. A short time later John purchased Mr. Wadsworth’s interest in the business and changed the name to John James Furnace. He sold the business to Ron Harris in 1980. John began his “retirement career” working for Clay Community Schools, in maintenance, where he would service and repair the corporation’s boilers. John retired after 15 years of service to the community.

John was also part owner in the House of Spirits which was purchased in 1978.

John was a member of the Kiwanis where he had served as president and the Masonic Lodge Centennial Lodge 541 where he had served as past master. John had also served as a 4-H leader and was a member of the Bee Ridge Congregational Church.

John enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing, hunting and mushroom hunting.

John was preceded in death by his parents: Ross and Emma James; a son Jeffrey R. James; siblings: Robert James, Doris Johnson, Mary Francis Rutherford, Jean Ensley, Janet Bledsoe, Tish Autison, Pat James, Web James, and a sibling in infancy.

He is survived by his two sons: John “Dick” R. James II and wife Anita of Brazil and Rick James and wife Debbie of Brazil; grandchildren: Heather James of Brazil, Jason James and wife Kara of Brazil, Ashley James of Corey, Grant James and wife Stacey of Knightsville, Jeffrey James and wife Jessica of Virginia, and Carissa Yates and husband Joseph of North Carolina; siblings: Tub James and wife Donna, Tom James and wife Phyllis, and Sandy Ames and husband Tom; girlfriend Aggie Urbain; her children: Troy Urbain and wife Lori and Kathy Crague and husband Chester as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Visitation will be at Lawson – Miller Chapel 1702 East National Ave. Brazil, Indiana on Friday, July 5, 2019 from 4-8pm. Services will be held at the funeral home, on Saturday, at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Clear Run Cemetery. Visit www.frenchfuneralhome.com to light a candle in his memory.
