Janet Lee (Owens) Lucas of Crawfordsville passed away Saturday afternoon at St. Elizabeth in Lafayette. She was 84.
Janet was a very sociable person who loved talking to others about her life in God. She was a former member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and currently, Calvary Chapel of Crawfordsville. One of her best memories was teaching History to young people at Maranatha Christian Academy. She was a US Census worker and a member of the community’s Welcome Wagon. In later years, Janet enjoyed watching birds and wildlife through her living room’s big picture windows.
Born March 13, 1934 in Pendleton, Indiana, Janet was the daughter of Everett R. Owens and Rosella Marie (Etchison) Owens. She graduated from Pendleton High School, class of 1952. Soon after, she captured the heart of Airforce sergeant, Perry G. Lucas from nearby Lapel, IN and on June 7, 1954, they were married. Not long after, her older sister Joyce married Perry’s brother, Kenny Lucas. They were a close-knit foursome and enjoyed many years together. Janet and Perry raised four children in the Crawfordsville area and celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2004.
Janet leaves behind a sister, Joyce (Lucas) Richey of Greensburg, three sons, Eric (who she beat at cards their last game together), Jeffrey (Sue) Lucas of Crawfordsville, Kyle (Brittany) of Lizton, eleven grandchildren, Jason, Paul, Abraham, Sophia, Arlen, Samuel, Matthew, Adrian, Nastassia, Felicia, Aaron; five grandchildren, Annabelle, Sarah, Claire, Madelyn and Evangeline.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband Perry, and beloved daughter Catherine Marie Lucas- Mefford, with whom she is now celebrating joyful reunion.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Burkhart Funeral Home, 201 W. Wabash, from 4 to 6 PM with a service to follow, led by Pastor Dave Keesee.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Montgomery County Community Foundation, Longview Tree and Greenspace Fund.
