Mary J. Girton, 85 of Brazil, passed away November 18, 2018 at 10:36 am at her home with her family beside her. She had been in failing health for the past several years. She was born November 17, 1933 in Clay County, the daughter of Roy Rhodes and Blanche Howald Rhodes. She graduated from Honey Creek High School, Class of 1952.
On May 4, 1956, Mary was united in marriage to Charles A. Girton. She and Charles have been long time members of the Union United Methodist Church.
Mary worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for Powell-Stephenson Lumber in Terre Haute for 34 years, retiring in 1996.
Charles planted the garden and tended it, and Mary did the canning of all the produce. She was a perfectionist in keeping books, and in keeping her home. Even in the past few years, when she used a wheelchair, she was always ready to dust and clean.
Survivors include her husband of 62 plus years, Charles Girton; their son Stephen Girton and his wife Gina; grandchildren, Gary A. Girton (Mystic) of Engles, IN, Michael Girton, Brandon Girton, Jennifer Shew (Jeremy O’Neal), Jason Shew (Nikki), and Jeremy Shew (Erica); great-grandchildren, Levi, Jackson, Cooper, Piper, Ava, Gracie and Dawson; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At her request, cremation was chosen with a graveside service to be held on Saturday December 1, at 1:00 pm at Summit Lawn Cemetery, with Rev. Jason Dean officiating. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Boy Scout Troop #95, C/O 4640 N. St. Rd. 59, Brazil, IN. 47834 or to the Union United Methodist Church.
