Larry Frye of Crawfordsville died Friday November 16. He is survived by his beloved spouse Barbara, Sons Mark (Kathleen) and Eric (Laura), daughter Heather (Trent) and three grandchildren Conner, Olive, and Nicholas.
His passion was volunteering to help others as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for abuse and neglected children, Montgomery United Fund for You board member and coordinator for the annual Wabash fraternities residential fund drive, Montgomery County CROP Walk for local and worldwide hunger relief, Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County board member, Boy Scouts, Nourish (Backpack) program for Hose and other non-profit organizations. He was a member of First Christian Church and the Kiwanis Club.
Mr. Frye was the retired head librarian at Wabash College. Before coming to Wabash, he was the library director at his alma mater Bethany College (West Virginia). He was one of the founders of PALNI (The Private Academic Library Network of Indiana), ALI (Academic Libraries of Indiana0 a consortium of library directors of all the public and private colleges and universities in the state, and served in a number of offices of INCOLSA (Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority), and served as one of two Indiana delegates to the Users Council of OCLC (Online Computer Library Center, an international consortium of libraries around the world). Because of his promoting technology in libraries he was named a Sagamore of the Wabash in 2004 by Indiana Governor Joe Kernan, received the 2004 Indiana Library Federal Special Services Award, and the American Library Associations 2001 Hugh Atkinson Award, he was the first college librarian so honored. He was also awarded an honorary degree from Wabash College class of 1981.
A memorial service will be held 1:00pm Saturday December 1 at First Christian Church, Crawfordsville. Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, PO Box 208, or the Youth Services Bureau CASA Program, 209 E. Pike ST., Crawfordsville.
