Income taxes would not be raised due to new Jail tax

The Putnam County Council is searching for ways to increase money toward the Putnam County Jail without increasing income tax on county residents. The solution the council is leaning toward is reducing public safety funds for local municipalities. The council does not want to raise the county income tax rates, therefore they are exploring decreasing the public safety tax from .5% to .4%, and implementing a correctional facility tax of .1%

Mayor Bill Dory does not want this change to occur, saying that the public safety tax, recently put in place, has greatly helped the safety of the Putnam County community and a decrease in this funding will make bettering our facilities much more difficult.
