Lewis B. “JR” Altemiller Jr., 71, of Poland, Indiana, passed away October 18, 2016 at Union Hospital, in Terre Haute, Indiana.
JR was born October 21, 1944, in Terre Haute, Indiana the son of Lewis B. Altemiller Sr. and Thelma (Crawford) Altemiller. He graduated from Brazil High School with the class of 1962. JR worked for Amax Coal for 32 years. JR also worked for the Operating Engineers Local 841 retiring in 2006. He married Caroline Kay Moore December 26, 1992.
JR was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 841, Local United Mine Workers Association which he had served as President, Elks Lodge of Brazil, Lion’s Club of Poland, Bowling Green Masonic Lodge 85 F and AM, Scottish Rite, Zorah Shrine of Terre Haute, Gold Wing Riders, American Motorcycle Association and the National Rifle Association.
In his free time JR enjoyed boating, traveling, riding his motorcycle, playing Euchre and watching NASCAR – especially his favorite driver Mark Martin.
He is survived by his wife Kay Altemiller of Poland; children: Lewis DeWayne Altemiller of Cloverdale, Leetha “Lori” Altemiller of Cloverdale, Lori Ann Smith and husband Jimmy of South Carolina and Robin Cain and husband Michael of South Carolina; grandchildren: Kody, Issac, Haleigh, Lindsey, Hillary, Tyler and Alexa; 4 great-grandchildren: Hazel, Paxton, Kainen, and Wyatt; a brother Vic Altemiller and a sister Christene Ellis as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
Memorial services will be at French Funeral Home, in Brazil, 421 East National Ave. Brazil, Indiana 47834, Sunday, at 3:00pm with Pastor Jeff Bridgewater officiating.
