Tuesday afternoon, October 4th, Greencastle Police Officer Nick Eastham was dispatched to the Putnam Plaza on report of the theft of a firearm from a vehicle. The firearm owner disclosed to Officer Eastham that he had momentarily stepped inside a store, having left his vehicle unsecured, and returned to find the firearm missing. A woman reportedly witnessed the theft, and identified the suspect while speaking with Officer Eastham. The witness disclosed she had observed the suspect reach into the vehicle and remove an unidentified item, placing the item in the left front pocket of his pants, before preceding to his own vehicle and driving off, only to return a few moments later. Upon further investigation Officer Eastham discovered the suspect had utilized a false name and date of birth, later identified as Phuong-Vu Nguyen, 45, formerly of Georgia, had recently moved to Greeencastle. Officer Eastham further determined that Nguyen had an outstanding arrest warrant from Georgia and a criminal history totaling in 37 pages, showing over twenty aliases previously used by Nguyen. He has been remanded to Putnam County Jail on preliminary charges of Theft of a Firearm.
