Joan VanBuskirk Goen, 89, of Bloomington and Avon, Indiana, peacefully passed away on Friday, July 15 at the Danville Regional Rehabilitation Center.
Joan was born September 18, 1926 in Bargersville, Indiana to Nellie and Andrew Derado. After the death of her mother, Joan was taken to the Knightstown Children’s Home at the age of three. She was adopted by John R. and Nellie VanBuskirk at the age of eight. Joan was an Elementary School Teacher for the Monroe County Community School Corporation for 44 years and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Indiana University.
She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, The Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion of Bloomington, AOp Sorority, and of the Monroe County Retired Teachers Association. She was an avid reader and movie watcher. She loved animals and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Floyd (her husband, Michael Dale Floyd) of Avon, IN, three grandchildren; Marcelyn Floyd (Travis Cross) of Orlando, FL, Dr. Meghan Robinson (Dr. Eric Robinson) of Boston, MA, Mitchel Floyd (Danielle Floyd) of Boise, ID, two great-granddaughters; Evelynn Robinson and Makenzie Floyd, and two great- grandpuppies, Furmata Robinson and Aurora Floyd.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Goen, her parents, three brothers; Robert Derado, Herbert Derado, Joseph Derado and one grandson, Matthew Floyd.
Memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday September 2, 2016 with a Memorial Service following at 5 p.m.
