Indiana Immunization Coalition is launching a statewide campaign, “Beware of B”, with the purpose of educating college students and their parents about Meningococcal Meningitis B. Pharmacies across Indiana have partnered with the Coalition to make it easy to obtain the vaccination for the B strain of meningitis before heading back to school this fall. According to the National Meningococcal Disease Awareness Survey, nearly 4 in 5 parents were unaware their child was not fully immunized against the five common groups of meningococcal disease. A seemingly “flu-like” disease, meningitis B can ravage body, becoming potentially fatal in as little as 24 hours. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has found that 10% to 15% of those who become infected, will not survive, and 20% of survivors suffer permanent disabilities, such as brain damage, loss of limbs, hearing loss, or potentially other serious impacts to the nervous system. The CDC recommends the Men-B vaccination for anyone ages 11 to 23, especially for those living in close quarters, like dormitories, where disease can spread rapidly. The Men-B Vaccine is available through your family doctor, or by visiting participating Indiana Walgreens stores.
