Here’s a few Tips to make the Best Impact with your Generous Donations/Spirit, & Avoid Scams!

As the recent tragedies take a heavy toll on our hearts, much like the violence and sadness in Orlando, people across the country feel inspired to open up their hearts and wallets to donate to nonprofits, hospitals and make charitable contributions to groups hoping to assist those struck by disaster. Here are some tips to make sure scammers don’t capitalize on your generosity, and your donation is given to those you intend to support.

Number 1, determine if the charity is legitimate. Look or ask for contact info on the organization or cause. The IRS also keeps a searchable list of organizations eligible for tax deductible charitable contributions. Number 2, determine how your donation will be used. Watch out for vague appeals that don’t clarify how funds will be used. Number 3, Watch out for phishing scams. Do not click on pop-up solicitations or reply to emails asking for donations. Number 4. Exercise caution when donating online or crowdfunding platforms. Number 5, Never wire money or use a pre-paid card. And finally Number 6, know that you can always cancel a pledge to make a contribution.

There are additional ways to donate which are free of cost to you, and sometimes come with a small reward. Such as blood and platelet donations through American Red Cross & Indiana Blood Center. And you can register with Be the Match as an organ donor with a simple a cheek swab.
