Jackie Ray Withers, Sr.

Jackie R. Withers, Sr. 79 of Knightsville, passed away at his home with his family by his side, on June 13, 2016 at 4:35pm. He was born January 15, 1937 in Knightsville, IN. the son of Charles Edward Withers, Jr. and Clysta Lorene Aker Withers. He went to Knightsville Elementary School and Graduated from Van Buren High School, Class of 1955. Jack served 8 years with the National Guard in the Brazil Unit. In his work career, he began at Allison Transmission for three years, and then obtained a position at Visqueen for 15 years. He purchased Ike Wintead’s Grocery and changed the name to “Jacks”. He ran the meat market for 25 years and enjoyed his years at the shop.

Jack also was a bus driver with the Clay Community School Corporation for several years. He was a man who believed in serving his community and was the Clay County Treasurer for 8 years. He also served as a County Commissioner for 6 years, and was currently a member of the Knightsville Town Board. Jack was a member of the El Shaddai Emmaus Community, Staunton Christian Church, the YMCA Silver Sneakers and was a singer with the Clay Community Theater and the Clay Community Choir.

Jack always enjoyed putting out a big garden and enjoyed even more giving away the plants and vegetables harvested. He like to cook and in the past enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jack loved people and did not know a stranger. He was generous with his time and very giving to others.

Jack is survived by his children, Piper Loraine Withers German (Paul), Jackie Ray Withers, Jr. (Cindy); step-children, Jeff Smithhart (Lori), and Jody Barksdale (Allison); grandchildren, Trey German, Jonathan German, Eric Withers (Katrina), Emily McCoy (Evan); step-grandchildren, Steve Myers (Kayla), Christy Myers (Chuck), Justin Myers (Takarra), Michael Myers (Melanie), Lexie Smithart, and Tyler Smithart; great-grandchildren, Hadley, Mayven and Thea McCoy; sister, Wanda Jane Pell and brother in law, George Leach; many nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Wilma Jean Leach; one brother Jimmy Joe Withers; and his late wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Withers.

Services will held Saturday at 11:00am at Lawson-Miller Chapel, with Pastor Mark Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Bee Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 and again Saturday one hour prior to services. The chapel will be open at 7:30 Saturday morning for those wanting to stop in early. If friends so desire, donations made be made in memory of Jack to the YMCA of Clay County. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family would like to thank all the friends and family that have stopped to visit Jack recently, sharing stories and laughter with Jack.
