Alexander Rossi, a California native, won the 100th running of the Indy 500 on Sunday. The race brought over a spectacular 350,000 fans, but a rookie won the race. The car owned by Andretti Autosport, nearly ran out of fuel on the last lap as he cruised over the yard of bricks four seconds ahead of second place finisher Carlos Munoz. Josef Newgarden and Munoz had been fighting for the lead, but both had to make green flag pitstops with under 10 laps left along with most of the field because they were low on fuel. Rossi stayed out to gamble and it paid off. He was so far ahead that he crossed the finish line going 179 mph which was 45.5 mph slower than the fastest lap all day. He was so low on fuel that he ran out just after he crossed the bricks and had to be towed to Victory Lane. Munoz and Newgarden ended up finishing 2nd and 3rd.
