Today the Parke County Sheriff’s Department posted on their Facebook page a reminder of two brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty in 1896. Deputy William Sweem and Sheriff William Mull were both killed on this day April 25th 1896. The Sheriff and Deputy were after a suspect who had recently killed his female neighbor with an axe and shot and killed her two children. The murderer then walked into town and barricaded himself inside a local bank. That is when Deputy Sweem and Sheriff Mull made contact with the suspect. After an exchange of gunfire the suspect shot and killed the Deputy and the Sheriff before fleeing. The incident came to a conclusion when the suspect shot himself after being surrounded by police. This day April 25th 2016 marks the 120th anniversary of Deputy William’s and Sheriff Mull’s sacrifice.
