Semi Roll Over Accident Results in Dangerous Anhydrous Ammonia Spill

On April 19th at 5:50pm Parke County Deputies responded to a semi roll over accident, on U.S. 41 and Larkin Street in Lyford, that spilled anhydrous ammonia and a small amount of diesel fuel. According to reports the driver, Mark Steward of Washington Indiana, was north bound when he entered a corner. The semi was traveling too fast for the corner and left the roadway. The tractor and trailer then rolled into a ditch after striking a guardrail. Due to the dangerous nature of anhydrous ammonia several houses were evacuated and a shelter in place was ordered for the surrounding area. U.S. 41 was then closed for the duration of the incident. The recovery and cleanup process lasted until 2am. The drive of the semi was transported to Union Hospital of Clinton and later flown by helicopter to an Indianapolis Hospital for treatment. His injuries are believed to be non life threatening.
