Ernie John Phillips

Ernie J. Phillips, 91, of Brazil, passed away at his residence April 17, 2016.

Ernie was born in Clay County, Indiana November 2, 1924 the son of Mont and Cebie (Cobb) Phillips. He attended Staunton High School through his junior year. Ernie enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during World War II with the United States Army 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division. Once he was discharged from the service he returned to Clay County, earned his G.E.D and attended Indiana State Teachers College. Ernie married Mary Killion on June 26, 1948 at the First Baptist Church Parsonage in Brazil. Ernie worked for 30 years at Columbia Records as a Foreman on the 7” Finishing Line. He retired in 1981 at the age of 57.

Ernie loved wood working. He built 3 homes and remodeled another. He built countless pieces of furniture for family and friends. He also enjoyed attending to his garden.

Ernie was a devout Christian. He and Mary were faithful in giving to many different ministries and most recently attended Epworth United Methodist Church until Ernie became too sick to attend.

In addition to his parents Mont and Cebie Phillips, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Annabelle, Lorene, Charles, Lucy, Mary, Arthur, Lester, Robert, Harlan, Joan, Bonnie and 3 in infancy.

Ernie, a devoted family man, is survived by his wife of 67 years Mary Phillips; a son Paul Phillips of Brazil; a daughter Rebecca Phillips of Terre Haute and a sister Betty Johnson of Brazil as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Services will be at French Funeral Home, 421 East National Ave. Brazil, Indiana 47834, Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 1:00pm with Pastor J.C. Neff officiating. Private burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home, Thursday, from 12:00pm until time of services.
