John David “J.D.” Burk, 85, of Brazil, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2016 following a wonderful life and surrounded by a loving family.
J.D. was a life-long resident of Clay County and will certainly be missed by friends and family. J.D. graduated from Staunton High School and then attended Indiana State University for 2 years. J.D served an enlistment in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after several years of service.
J.D. was born in Clay County, Indiana, July 1, 1930, the son of Ire Emit Burk and Mayme Elizabeth (Roeschlein) Burk.
He married Janice L. Turner on January 27, 1961. They celebrated 55 years of marriage at St. Vincent Clay Hospital where they were treated to a surprise anniversary party by the staff of the hospital. J.D. worked as a salesman for Hedge Motor Company and Morton Building Corporation for many years. J.D. served as Clay County Commissioner for 4 years. J.D. and Janice also owned and operated the Roller Barn roller skating rink for a number of years and also the car wash on the West end of Brazil on National Avenue. In his younger days he always owned a bird dog and enjoyed quail and rabbit hunting. After his retirement, J.D. spent his mornings with his friends at Hardee’s and afternoons on the Forest Park Golf Course. J.D. and Janice loved to attend Northview sporting events; especially volleyball and girls and boys basketball.
J.D. was preceded in death by his parents Ire and Mayme Burk and a sister Wilma Johnson Keen.
J.D. is survived by his wife of 55 years Janice L. (Turner); two daughters: Shannon L. Shuler and husband Dennis Shuler of Terre Haute and Sheila M. Clark and husband Kip Clark; his son John David Burk II; grandchildren: Jacob Hoke and fiancé Brittany Marsh, Justin Shuler, Kyler Benbow and husband Chance Benbow, and Kaylee Clark.
Visitation for J.D. will be at Lawson – Miller Chapel, 1702 East National Ave. Brazil, Indiana 47834, Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 10am until 2:00pm. Services will be held at the funeral home Saturday, at 2:00pm. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Forest Park Golf Course.
