Norman Leon Handy

Norman Leon Handy, 88, of Greencastle passed away on Friday, Jan. 8, 2016. Born June 6, 1927 in Greencastle, Indiana, he was the son of Bernard F. and Wilma P. (McMains) Handy.
A United States Army Veteran, he was a 1945 graduate of Greencastle High School and 1950 graduate of Purdue University.
Following a career with the Handy’s Milk and Ice Cream Company, more commonly known as Handy’s Dairy, he retired in 2002.
Community engagement was an essential part of Norman’s life with his having served or holding memberships with Masonic Temple Lodge #47 (50-year member), Indianapolis Scottish Rite, Greencastle Rotary, B.P.O.E #1077 (50-year member), Greencastle High School Alumni Association, Putnam County Quail Unlimited, Putnam County 4-H Shooting Sports, Little Walnut Conservatory District Board, Greencastle Zoning Board and being a founding donor to the Putnam County Community Foundation. He was also a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Greencastle.
On November 30, 1952, he married Murlin E. Rossok in Greencastle. She preceded him in death on May 29, 2006. He later married Judith Wilcox and she survives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Franklin Handy, brothers-in-law; Richard Lemmink, Ralph Levi, and Gaylord Rossok, sisters-in-law; Doreen Rossok Braden and Carol Jean Rossok Burk.
Survivors include sons, Jon D. (Tamara), Fillmore and Bernard Thomas (Annette), Greencastle, Grandchildren; Meagan Handy, Tess Handy and Jon Ross Handy and sisters, Betty Levi, Wyoming and Anita Lemmink, Florida along with many other friends and family.
Graveside services with Masonic Rites and Military Honors will be held on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Forrest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle with interment to follow. Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle has been entrusted with arrangements.
In celebration of Norman’s philanthropic spirit, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Putnam County Community Foundation to the fund of the donor’s choice.
