Strong Second-Half Lifts #24 DePauw to Hasbrook Classic Win over Heidelberg



DePauw limited visiting Heidelberg to just 17 second-half points and six field goals while committing just one turnover in the final 20 minutes and pulled way for a 66-51 win in the fourth and final game of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Classic. In the opening game, Wisconsin-Eau Claire topped Franklin 57-48.

The Tigers, rankled 24th in the latest Division III Coaches’ Poll, moved to 8-3, while the Student Princes dropped to 5-7.

DePauw jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first 3:14 after scoring nine straight and extended the margin to 17-7 at the 4:19 mark on Emily Budde’s three-pointer.

Heidelberg closed the quarter with a 7-2 run to trim the Tigers’ lead to 19-14 at the break. DePauw extended the lead to as many as eight in the second quarter before the Student Princes battled back with eight consecutive capped by Nicole Payne’s three with 2:59 remaining to knot the contest at 27-27. The teams went to the halftime tied, 34-34.

The Tigers gradually pulled away in the third and took a 51-41 lead into the final stanza. Heidelberg trimmed the margin to single digits early in the fourth, but Taylor Howard and Abby Keller hit back-to-back jumpers in the paint before Keller added three free throws to end a 7-0 stretch that pushed DePauw’s lead to 60-44.

Budde led DePauw with 14 points, while Taylor Howard and Claire Ryan each chipped in 12. Keller hauled down a team-best 11 rebounds with Ryan and Budde each handing out five assists.

Carli Patrick paced Heidelberg with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Allie Hawkins added four assists.

DePauw shot 43.6 percent for the game to Heidelberg’s 31.6 and the Tigers held a 32-30 edge on the boards. The Tigers turned the ball over just five times with the Student Princes committing 15 as DePauw held a 17-3 advantage in points off of turnovers.

In the day’s opening game, Franklin scored the final 12 points of the opening quarter but Wisconsin-Eau Claire outscored the Grizzlies 20-8 in the second for a 29-24 halftime lead. Franklin was as close as four, but the Blugolds closed with a 7-2 run over the final 1:28 to seal the victory.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Teenie Lichtfuss led all scorers with 30 points, while Erin O’Toole added 12. Katie Brewer paced Franklin with 10 points and eight rebounds.
