Jack Theodore Leifheit, 90, lifelong resident of Brazil, died December 1, 2015 at Exceptional Living Center in Brazil following a brief illness.
Jack was born June 22, 1925, in Brazil, Indiana the son of Walter J. and Harriet (Leavitt) Leifheit.
After graduating from Brazil High School in 1943 he enlisted in the United States Navy from which he served from 1943 – 1946. He received special training in electronics and sound reproduction and was assigned to Armed Forces Radio station on the island of Attu, in the Aleutian Islands. His love of music was a great asset in his work. Following his tenure in the military Jack began taking classes at Purdue and Indiana State University.
Jack married Virginia “Ginny” Trout on August 29, 1949 at the First Presbyterian Church in Brazil, by the late Rev. Jack Masters. Jack knew Ginny was “the one” after the first date!
Jack was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brazil and had served as a deacon, an elder and a trust. He was also a life member of the Brazil Elks Lodge #762, past board member of the Brazil Y.M.C.A., Brazil Rotary Club, Brazil Chamber of Commerce and he had served as the President of the Merchants Association.
Jack enjoyed playing golf and he and his wife, Ginny, enjoyed many golfing vacations over the years, having played golf at numerous courses in the Eastern half of the U.S.A. Music was a lifelong hobby and enjoyment for Jack. In his early years he was an accomplished musician, having played saxophone with many dance bands in college and in this area. He was an avid Hi-Fi and Stereo aficionado and had acquired a huge recorded music collection including many rare collectors’ items from WWII.
He owned and operated Leifheit’s Men’s Wear in downtown Brazil. The store was started by Jack’s father in 1925 and had been in continuous operation until Jack retired in closed the store in January 1991. Under Jack’s ownership the store grew in popularity and in 1977, a new building was built at 111-113 West National Avenue.
Many of the traveling salesmen would state to Jack that his store was one of the finest independent men’s stores in the state of Indiana. Only high quality name brand men’s wear was stocked in the store.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents: Walter J. and Harriet (Leavitt) Leifheit; a son Ted C. Leifheit; two brothers: Walt Leifheit and Karl Leifheit and a sister Mary Jane Leifheit Robinette.
He is survived by his wife Ginny Leifheit of Brazil, daughter Pam Leifheit of Columbus, Indiana, a granddaughter Jessica Waller and husband Michael Waller of Columbus, Indiana, sisters-in-law Dorothy Latta of Brazil, Dorothy Leifheit Shelby of Downers Grove, Illinois, nieces: Susan Latta of Terre Haute, Indiana and Teri Robinette of Tucson, Arizona, Linda Leifheit Greer of Dallas, Texas and Lisa Leifheit of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and one nephew Todd Robinett of Mound, Minnesotta.
Visitation will be at Lawson – Miller Chapel, 1702 East National Ave. Brazil, Indiana 47834, Saturday, December 5, 2015 from 10:00am until Noon. Services will be at the funeral home, Saturday, at noon. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery.
