Hoosiers Open Up Season 2-0

Kevin ”Yogi” Ferrell scored 22 points and
James Blackmon Jr. added 20, helping No. 14 Indiana roll past
Austin Peay 102-76 on Monday night.

The Hoosiers pulled away by making 15 consecutive shots during a
12-minute, 14-second stretch of the second half to open with two
wins for the ninth straight season.

The Governors (0-2) were led by Chris Horton with 17 points and 12
rebounds. Khalil Davis had 16 points and Indianapolis native John
Murry had 14.

It wasn’t as easy as it looked.

Austin Peay scored the first five points of the second half to cut
a 12-point halftime deficit to 51-44.

But after Max Bielfeldt came up with a steal and a layup with 15:31
to play, the Hoosiers didn’t miss another shot until Blackmon Jr.’s
errant shot with 3:17 to go.

It’s the first time since last season’s opener the Hoosiers topped
the 100-point mark.

The Hoosiers were efficient offensively, shooting 66.7 percent from
the field while going 16 of 27 from 3-point range – falling two
short of the school’s single-game record (18) set last season
against Minnesota.

In all, five Indiana players reached double figures.

However, coach Tom Crean saw plenty of flaws, too.

The Hoosiers committed 20 turnovers and allowed the Govs, who
managed only 41 points in a season-opening loss at Vanderbilt to
come within a basket of that total just in the first half.

MOVING ON UP

Ferrell has started 104 games since arriving in Bloomington and his
stats are starting to show it. He passed Jimmy Rayl (1,401 points)
and Kirk Haston (14,006) to crack the top 20 on the school’s
scoring list. Ferrell has scored 1,414 points and is within two 3s
of tying Tom Coverdale for No. 3 in school history with 200.
