DePauw Bows Out of NCAA Tourney

Memphis, Tenn. – For the second time this season the DePauw field hockey team could not figure out Rhodes College, falling 5-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

DePauw had to play from behind for most the game as Rhodes’ scoring came one after another. Evy Royther scored the game’s first goal 6:25 into the game and scored again 1:20 later as DePauw faced a 2-0 deficit just eight minutes in.

However, Paige Berliner, DePauw’s leading scorer, made it a 2-1 game before halftime when she scored at 21:39. It remained a 2-1 game well into the second half until Rhodes scored three goals in a span of 5:14.

Erin Best scored the first at 52:29. Alex Friedman scored at minute 57, and Christina Difelice scored 43 seconds later at 57:43.

DePauw actually outshot the Lynx 14-12 and took almost three times as many corners at 17-6. In the they could not capitalize on their scoring opportunities.

Rhodes won the previous contest between the two teams, 4-1. DePauw’s season comes to a close at 15-5 and after winning the NCAC Tournament Championship.
