Larry Hubert Chavis, 73, of Brazil, passed away at Cobblestone Crossing, in Terre Haute, following a brief illness.
Larry was born August 25, 1941 in Brazil, the son of Harvey H. and Marian L. (Archer) Chavis. Larry graduated from VanBuren High School with the Class of 1959. Larry was a member of the Van Buren High School basketball team. His senior year he and his teammates, under the leadership of Coach Pete Chalos, enjoyed an undefeated season. Larry served his country in the United States Army from 1964-1966. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1966. After his return from the military he went to work at Amax Coal Company. He retired after 39 years of service to the company as the Plant Maintenance Supervisor. After retiring from Amax he worked at the Clay County Court House and York Chevrolet.
He was a member of the Community Missionary Church, American Legion Post 2 and the Old Time Car Club in Terre Haute.
Some of the successes Larry enjoyed in his life include: helping the pit crew for Jim McElreath, James McElreath, and Gary Bettenhausen at the Indianapolis 500, Pocono 500 and Michigan 500. He was also chosen to serve in the military honor guard for President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Inauguration in 1965 along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C.. In 1983 he was awarded Exceptional Standards and Leadership in Coal Mine Safety through the State of Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harvey and Marian Chavis.
He is survived by his brother Gary Chavis and wife Phyllis of Terre Haute; niece and nephew: Tammara Chavis of Richmond Indiana and Brent Chavis of Bradenton, Florida; great-niece Bailey Gyger of Lebanon, Indiana; great-nephew Shiloh Chavis of Bradenton, Florida and great-great niece Maddison Gyger of Lebanon, Indiana.
