Police demonstrations inspire new protest songs

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Stop. Hey, what’s that sound? Protest songs are taking their place alongside chants of “I can’t breathe” and “Hands up, don’t shoot” as demonstrators raise their voices to condemn the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police. There’s something happening here….

As Advertised

Having covered the discussions, vote, construction, and opening of the Radio Beach Family Aquatic Center I was well aware of the positive impact the project had on our community.  But going as a consumer offered an even more positive experience.  Took four grand kids (with two of their parents and grand mother) to the beach on Saturday and the joy in their eyes, the laughter in their voices, and the ease in getting them to bed that night all proved once and for all how good an investment the community made.

Even the Temporary Life Partner got wet.

The “New” Inman Field

Tonight the new Inman Field will be unveiled.  Never mind that the temperatures will feel like high noon in July – it IS August for heaven’s sake and high school kids are suited up for football.  But that’s another story for another time.

The Vincennes Schools saved up half a million dollars and have built – or finishing up – new locker rooms, an indoor hitting facility for baseball and golf, removed the track, replaced the fences, constructed a new press box, and poured a bunch of concrete.

I am one of those who feels the field should have been refurbished.  It is a tradition I personally believe should be retained.  But there are those who don’t feel that way and they really didn’t get a say in the improvements.  School officials said they made an informal study and decided to leave the field where it is and not move it to the high school campus.  From a guy who probably has been to more school board meetings than any school board member, superintendent, or administrator now in the Vincennes Schools, I can tell you there was no public discussion about the plan and that’s wrong.

The result will be just fine – this time.  But what about other projects and other important and/or expensive changes?  It’s a slippery slope.  The school board or any board for that matter should not get away with what has happened at Inman Field.  Half a million dollars may not seem like much money and it isn’t in the big picture, but it is the way it was done – no public discussion, no public input, no public bidding.
